Description: Armstrong Atlantic State University announces a faculty search in physics and invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. The appointment will begin in August 2008, pending budgetary approval.
 
Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field is required as well as a strong commitment to quality teaching and scholarly activities involving undergraduates. Candidates should have completed or should expect to complete the Ph.D. by August 10, 2008. The field of specialization is open. The minimum qualifications for candidates also include effective communication as demonstrated by a seminar during the on-campus interview. In addition to providing quality instruction to students, the successful candidate will be expected to carry a service load within the department and the university as well as engage undergraduate students in scholarly activities.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.

 
The Department: The Department consists of 4 full time physics faculty, 12 full time chemistry faculty, five part-time faculty and three staff. Full-time faculty have responsibilities in the areas of scholarship, advisement and service, as well as teaching. The Department provides opportunities for undergraduate research in physics. Many students report their results via presentations at professional meetings, publications and the preparation of written reports as required for the experience. Faculty members advise chemistry and physics majors as well as a wide variety of pre-professional and undecided majors. Students interact with faculty in several discipline-related organizations. The Department is housed in a 129,000 ft2 state of the art science center, opened in June 2002. A large collection of modern equipment is housed in the Science Center, as well as numerous networked computers for data analysis and word processing. The University: Armstrong Atlantic State University is a four-year coeducational senior unit in the University System of Georgia and has an enrollment of more than 6800 students. It is located approximately twelve miles south of the historic district of the city of Savannah on a modern 268 acre campus. The core mission of the university is a strong liberal arts education for all students, and the strategic directions of the university are applied science and technology, teacher education, health professions, and community and economic development.
   
The Community: Armstrong is located in historic Savannah Georgia, a coastal city located 250 miles southeast of Atlanta, Georgia and 150 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. Savannah has long been known as a charming city; rich in beauty, cultural diversity, support for the arts, and opportunities for recreation. In the last decade the city has capitalized on its diverse manufacturing base, flourishing tourist industry, and thriving port to become the economic motor for the region. With a metropolitan area population of 296,232 and an adjacent six-county population of 471,000, Savannah is well-positioned for future growth. The university campus is 20 miles from sandy beaches, and only a mile or so from crabbing, shrimping, and saltwater fishing.
